Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva is Amitabha Buddha’s right side attendant and is one of the eight great Bodhisattvas who are Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, Manjusri
Bodhisattva, Samanthabhadra Bodhisattva, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, etc. Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva is always mindful of Amitabha Buddha and leads living beings to the Pure Land with wisdom light that universally shines. Also when he is walking, his solemn and unrestrained manners make the realms in the Ten Directions vibrate. So he is called Great Momentum.

The images of Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva are diversified and solemn. Some hold the Shell Leaf Sutra, some hold a Ruyi (an S-shaped ornamental object, usually made of jade) and most hold a lotus flower. He wears a heavenly crown with a treasure bottle on it. It is said in the sutra that the treasure bottle contains incredible light that universally manifests the undertakings of all Buddhas. The Sutra on Contemplation of Amitayus says, “On the usnisa is a treasure bottle that contains various types of light which manifests the undertakings of all Buddhas.”

Long time ago, in Chakravarti raja’s days, there were two brothers by the names Dharma Mind and dharma Thought. They vowed at the same time. Dharma Mind vowed to be Lord Brahma when the Tathagata was born in the bhadra kalpa so that he could persuade the Buddha to turn the Big Dharma wheel. On the other hand, Dharma Thought vowed to be a Vajra strong man to stay close to the Buddha to defend the Buddhist Dharma. Thus he became a Vajrapani Bodhisattva. The Vajra pestle in his right hand stands for “the firm, immortal Bodhi mind.” This image is an embodiment of Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva’s anger form. He is called Vajrapani Bodhisattva because he holds a Vajra pestle and serves as the Buddha’s warrior attendant. He has the spiritual power to eradicate wickedness and subdue devils.

Buddha-recitation Samadhi:
Suppose one of two people always remembers the other, but the other being remembered always forgets him. If they meet, they will not be aware of each other. They cannot recognize each other when they see each other. If two people can remember each other deeply even life after life, they will be inseparable as a form or a shadow. The Tathagatas in the Ten Directions take pity on and are mindful of living beings like a mother remembering her child. If the child runs away and disappears, of what use is the mother’s remembrance? If the child thinks of his mother in the same manner his mother thinks of him, then they will not be far apart life after life. If living beings remember or are mindful of Buddhas, they are sure to see Buddhas now or in the future and will not be far away from Buddhas. Without the help of convenient means, their minds will naturally open.

This is like a person who is always fumigated by incense will carry fragrance on his body. This is called solemnity of fragrant light. I entered the Tolerance of Non-arising Dharma with the mindfulness of Buddhas on the causal ground. Now, in this realm, I gather in those who are mindful of Buddhas and then lead them back to the Pure land. The Buddha asks about the approach to attain perfect penetration. I have no choice but to gather in the Six Consciousnesses via continuous pure mindfulness and finally attain Samadhi. This is the best method.
