The Four Dharma Realms are the Conditions Arise View of the doctrine of the Flower Ornament (Hua Yen). In the Four Dharma Realms, everything is without hindrance and endless conditions arise. The Ten Mysteries are boundless that reflect each other and enter each other’s gate. They are all within the realm of the maha vaipulya.
The dharma realm arises when one dharma gives rise to all dharmas, and all give rise to one. Hence, in all of the phenomena of the universe, one is everything and everything is one. In such a realm, all phenomena can enter each other and stay close to each other. Either “one” or “all” can be primary or secondary to each other, smooth and without hindrance. Such an endless view is called the view of “Conditions Arise in the Dharma Realm.”
“Conditions Arise in the Dharma Realm” can be elaborated with two aspects: contamination and purity. The arising of conditions in the contamination dharma realm means the arising of conditions in the deluded realm where the true suchness is covered and thus unable to penetrate ignorance. On the other hand, the arising of conditions in the purity dharma realm means the dharma nature arises, i.e., the true suchness can penetrate and manifest, like the sunshine penetrating the clouds and extinguishing the dark obstacles of ignorance.
The Hua Yen doctrine further elaborates the arising conditions of the dharma realm with the gists of Three Natures One Boundary, Six Meanings in the Cause Gate, Six Phenomena Compatible with Each Other, and Four Dharma Realms. In addition, the “one thought replete with three thousands” theory of the Tien Tai School deals with the arising conditions in the light of the essence of truth. In contrast, the Hua Yen’s “conditions arise in the dharma realm” theory deals with “all phenomena can enter each other and stay close to each other” in the light of each individual phenomenon. All these inherit the “conditions caused by karma” theory of the Small Vehicle Buddhism and the “conditions caused by
ālaya-vijñāna” of the Great Vehicle Buddhism. Together, they accomplished the Condition Arising Theory of the True Great Vehicle Buddhism.
