The Capability of Learning the Doctrines

    大智發於心,於心無所尋,成就一切義,無古亦無今。佛學與學佛本一事,在修學過程中,如單講佛學不去學佛。縱說、橫說,尚是無補身心。

    佛學;是一門究竟圓滿智覺之學問,專研佛經的義理,叫做佛學。以佛的經典為修學標準,而把錯的行為修正過來,就是修行。修習覺悟之道,發願往生,叫做學佛。

    學佛的人固然不可荒廢佛學,然專講佛學而無去修行,內在本源未顯真藏。學佛是要實地用功,不能單憑口說,如不實地用功,無論如何講說精通,終是數他人之珍寶,算不了自己資財,飽不了自家肚腹。多聞是佛學,精進就是學佛。佛學學佛、兼而行之,是勝義。唯心佈萬種、了者異中同,解行並重、福慧雙修,唯學、唯修,法喜充滿。

The Capability of Learning the Doctrines

The great wisdom originates from the mind, and one has nothing to seek in the mind.  One achieves all doctrines at all times.  Learning Buddhism and learning to be a Buddha are originally the same thing.  In the process of cultivation, if you just learn Buddhism but do not learn how to be a Buddha, it will do you no good physically and mentally.

Buddhism is knowledge that is utmost, complete, and wisdom-enlightening.  The study of the principles in the sutras is called Buddhism.  Using the Buddhist sutras as standards for cultivation and correcting the wrongdoings is called the spiritual practice.  Cultivating the ways to get enlightened and forming an aspiration to be reincarnated to the Pure Land is called learning to be a Buddha.

A Buddhist practitioner surely should not neglect the study of Buddhism.  But if he solely works on the study of Buddhism and does not correct his behaviors, the innate treasure within may not be revealed.  When practicing Buddhism, one should realistically work hard without just talking about it.  If he doesn’t work hard realistically, no matter how skillfully he lectures, he is just counting others’ treasures that will not satisfy him.  When studying Buddhism, one should hear as much as possible, and when learning to be a Buddha he has to be diligent.  If both can be done simultaneously, that will be a magnificent thing.  If myriad of seeds are spread in the mind, similarities can be found among differences, understanding and actions are equally emphasized, both blessings and wisdom are cultivated, both learning and cultivation are done, then one will be filled with the joy of dharma.
