The Bodhi Sweet Dew—VI

《華嚴經》云:

世間如陽焰 以想有差別
知世住於想 遠離三顛倒
譬如熱時焰 世見謂為水
水實無所有 智者不應求
眾生亦復然 世趣皆無有
如焰住於想 無礙心境界
若離於諸想 亦離諸戲論
愚癡著於想 悉令得解脫

貪欲等逼惱身心的緣故,叫做煩惱。或者說:「一個想法在剛剛生起時,就使內心不甘寂寞,這些想法就是煩惱。」 

煩惱力有何表現呢?               

以煩惱的作用,無量眾生對理與非理、利與害、重與輕等等,沒有辦法認清、不能明辨。在不覺知狀態下,心態和行為上顛倒趣人,造作輪迥。

    有很多方法都能摧伏煩,比如修不淨觀、或者修慈慧觀等等。當遇煩惱境,以世間道理修養壓伏,是短暫的,要真正能淨煩惱障,要有這樣的發願。發願能自在,利用煩惱修習菩提分的種種法。 

    由修習淨除根本煩惱和隨煩惱的力量,從內心拓展浩瀚如海的無量法門的精要,得到佛法圓滿的成就。

○以無住為貴,天下無過不去之事,之所以過不去的人,皆緊握各自所住與所執而不釋懷。

The Mahāvaipulya Buddhāvataṃsaka Sūtra says:

The mundane world is like the blazing sun. 

Thinking differs from people to people.

Knowing that people abide by their thinking,

We should stay away from the Three Inverted Views. 

This is like the blazing flames are thought of as water.

Water is actually non-existent, so wise people should not seek after it.

Neither should sentient beings, because nothing exists in this world.

To abide by thinking like a flame will bring no hindrances to the mindset.

If one stays away from all thoughts, he will also stay away from all joking matters.

We should liberate the ignorant ones who adhere to thinking.

When one’s body and mind are tortured by greed, this is called affliction.  Or we can put it this way:  When a new thought that has just arisen makes one unwilling to accept loneliness, such a thought is affliction.

In what way does affliction show?  Influenced by affliction, numerous sentient beings are unable to recognize and discern between principles and non-principles, pros and cons, as well as slight and important matters.  Their mindsets and behaviors are inverted unconsciously and then may create reincarnations. 

There are many ways to subdue afflictions, such as the cultivation of the View of Impurity (Asubha) or the View of Compassion and Wisdom.  When we encounter afflicting phenomena, it is temporary to subdue them with the mundane principles and self-cultivation.  To really get rid of the hindrance of afflictions, we should vow to freely make use of the afflictions to cultivate the bodhipakṣa dharma.  Through the cultivation we can sever the fundamental afflictions and, with the power of afflictions, develop the boundless elite of the dharma to achieve the perfect Buddhist Dharma. 

If we value the non-abiding, everything can be made through.  If someone cannot make it through, it’s because he tightly grasps what he clings to and will not let it go.
